Curriculum Statement - Physical Education

Intent

To ‘provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities will be provided for pupils to compete in sport and other activities to build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.’ (National Curriculum. Physical Education programmes of study Key Stage 1 and 2. 2013)

At Christ Church First School, we recognise the importance of Physical Education and the role it has too play in promoting long term, healthy lifestyles and making a positive impact on, physical, mental and social health. The intent of our PE curriculum is to provide all students with high quality PE and sport provision. It is our vision for every child to succeed and achieve their potential. We strive to inspire our students through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. Through our teaching of PE, we will instil our Christian values and transferable skills such as resilience and respect as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sports through our extra-curricular programme.

Implementation

  • PE at Christ Church First School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including invasion games, net & wall games, striking and fielding games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and swimming.
  • The whole of Year 2, 3 & 4 has swimming in blocks throughout the year in order to meet with the National Curriculum requirements and achieve the bench mark set out.
  • Pupils participate in at least 2 hours of high-quality PE lessons each week in KS1 and 2 covering a different area of the curriculum each half term. EYFS complete at least 1 hour of high quality PE per week where they look at developing fine and gross motor control through fun and engaging activities.
  • The long term planning for each class sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
  • Teachers use and adapt planning and resources to ensure lessons across years show progression.
  • Children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. We provide inclusive and enjoyable clubs which increases children’s physical activity.
  • Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events and festivals within the local area and beyond.

Impact

At Christ Church First School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. This can be seen in the development of the children throughout their time here. All children have the necessary skills and have opportunities to demonstrate improvement and to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise. We aspire for children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity which becomes part of their future life outside of school. Children represent the school at sporting events at a local level. Alongside this, we share sporting achievements both in and out of school in class time or whole school worships, so that we are promoting sports and activities, as well as celebrating all levels of success.
